Description
Milton (Milt) Jackson was a legendary American jazz vibraphonist best known for the Modern Jazz Quartet, one of the longest-standing bands in jazz history. According to Jackson, the popularity of these four musicians was mainly due to the way in which classical music was improvised, which led to a combination of classical music with jazz and pop.
Milt has been active in music for nearly 60 years and has collaborated with pioneers such as Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane and Coleman Hawkins. During his career he has won the National Music Award, the French Bicentennial Award and an honorary doctorate from the Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. In addition, he has earned places in the Percussion Hall Of Fame and Down Beat Magazine’s Hall Of Fame.
Watch Live Jazz and Club Cinetone pay tribute to Milt Jackson starring Steve Nelson. Steve is an American jazz vibraphonist and marimba player. In addition to his solo work, Nelson is known for his collaborations since the 1990s with bassist Dave Holland’s Quintet and Big Band.
Nelson graduated from Rutgers University with both master’s and bachelor’s degrees in music, and his teaching activities include a position at Princeton University. He has performed at concerts and festivals around the world and recorded as the leader of his own group. He has performed and recorded with Kenny Barron, Bobby Watson, Mulgrew Miller, David “Fathead” Newman, Johnny Griffin and Jackie McLean.
Steve is accompanied by top musicians Rob van Bavel (piano), Joris Teepe (double bass) and Marcel Serierse (drums).
